Summit County Communities

Summit County is one of the sixty four counties that make up the state of Colorado. Summit County is the nineteenth largest of the counties in terms of population, with a total residency figure of twenty three thousand five hundred and thirty eight residents as of the year two thousand census. Summit County is equivalent to the Silverthorne Micropolitan Statistical Area, and the county seat of Summit County is Breckenridge. Summit County is situated in the central portion of the state of Colorado, which is predominately a mountainous region. Summit County was officially recognized in the year eighteen sixty one, before Colorado was even a state, and was readjusted to its current boundaries twenty two years later.

Summit County derives its name from the preponderance of mountain peaks and summits throughout the six hundred and nineteen square miles of its area. Summit County is bordered by Clear Creek County, Park County, Lake County, Grand County, and Eagle County. Summit County is a highly scenic and beautiful region, as evidenced by the two national preserves in the area – White River National Forest and the Eagles Nest Wilderness. Residents of and visitors to Summit County can enjoy this beauty through a number of trails, including the American Discovery Trail, the Colorado Trail, and the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail. Cyclists can enjoy the area through the Great Parks Bicycle Route and the TransAmerica Trail Bicycle Route, while drivers can enjoy the Top of the Rockies National Scenic Byway.

Summit County is known interchangeably as Colorado's Playground and God's country due to the many recreational and scenic points of interest found in the area. Undoubtedly the most popular of these offerings are winter sports, especially skiing, which is unequivocally the top activity in the county. Summit County boasts Keystone, Copper Mountain, Breckenridge, Arapahoe Basin, Dillon, and Green Mountain, which are all popular destinations for amateur and experienced skiers alike. Other notable activities in Summit County include snowboarding, cross country skiing, hiking, biking, and just sightseeing. In addition to a number of ski resorts and villages, Summit County is also home to the relatively large communities of Silverthorne and Breckenridge.
